The Montessori educational approach is fundamentally based on human development. Dr. Montessori created learning environments that consider and meet the developmental needs of the whole child during each stage of growth from birth to adolescence. In these prepared environments, children are supported in gaining independence in all areas. The role of the trained teacher or “Guide” is to observe the children, nurture their social and emotional needs, support their efforts, and encourage them in the exploration of new ideas and skills. Through careful observation, the guide is able to connect the child to appropriate materials so that they are able to meet their individual needs, and support their self construction.
